"After Forty Fucking Years..."
Monday, 10/13/03
After almost a month of restricting myself to go online, heto ko ngayon at parang hayok sa kakatype. Bakit ba? Eh sa di kami nakakahawak man lang ng PC sa work eh. There's no need daw kasi. Sabagay, tama naman sila, what would you need a PC for kung andun ka in-between the tank roof and the scorching sun? Okay, fine. It's not THAT necessary.
Well, anyway. So far okay naman ang buhay-buhay. Ayoko ng maghalungkat ng English. Okay na to. Hmmm, give me a few years time and I'd be scrambling under the bed for my English vocabulary. Naalala ko tuloy yung sabi ni Sir Allister, the human body has a natural way of purging parts that are of no apparent use, or those that we seldom use. Kaya kung di mo gamitin ang isip mo, chances are, in a few years time, your intelligence will take a quantum leap (with space-time in reverse). Shit! E pano na yung .... ? Does that mean it will shrink into "Dagul-like" proportion when not put in use? Hahahahaha! Wag naman sana! Di ko pa namamaximize yun into full potential. Ooopppss! Just a slip-out!
Feeling athletic kami ngayon sa bunkhouse. Sabi nga ni Orvie (one of my housemates and officemates kahit wala kaming office), kailangang i optimize ang facilities habang andyan. So he got each of us (me and Richard, my other housemate) a badminton racket. Orbs was so excited to try the racket that we played right after he got home from a night shift (that's a 6pm - 6am schedule). E kawawa naman so, pagbigyan! Had a great time smashing (parang table tennis ah!) and sweating ourselves for about two hours. And now here I am with aching legs and arms.
I don't feel good when I look in front of the mirror. Ang itim-itim ko na kasi. Siguro mga 4 degrees darker than I used to be. "Moreno" (be sensitive, okay!) na nga ako tapos lalo pang nasunog. Two months pa lang yun. What more kung 10 months na? Scary! Hay. Let's face it! Isipin mo na lang na reward mo yun if you do your work effectively and efficiently. Sige rationalize pa natin! Hehehe.
I wish I could say the juicier parts of our work in here pero hindi pwede eh. Confidential kasi so wag na lang. Mahirap na. Sometimes I'm imagining myself that I'm one of those spies in a James Bond movie out for a secret mission. Pero imagination lang yun. Asa pa.
Nonsense na yata to. Til next time.

Holiday Friday
Still feeling exhausted from the 4-hour trip from Bataan last night. I took the bus trip over the ferry trip because it was half as cheap and I wasn't in a hurry. It wasn't the most comfortable trip, though. Must've been the 10 laps I did in the swimming pool before that. Ayan, feeling-feeling kasing mag-exercise eh. I normally sleep during bus rides but that was the last thing on my mind. 'Twas the first time for me to take the route and I wasn't familiar with the bus stops, either, so I had to nibble at least seven candies to keep me awake.
Thursday: Rocking the Boat
We had to inspect two huge oil tankers today. Isang Malaysian tsaka isang Turkish Oil Tanker. On board Petro Concord (Malaysian) we had to inspect the tank compartments prior to loading, inspecting some things here and there, familiarizing ourselves with the various procedures. Had a taste of Soya drink, courtesy of the crew. It tastes more like liquefied taho with some indiscernible flavor.
Mas malaki tsaka hi-tech yung Turkish tanker, MT Gönen, but like the Concord, pang-export din yung product na niload sa kanya. We were lucky enough to witness both kasi it would take days to fill a huge tanker. Mostly inspections lang yung nangyari on board the tanker (hindi ko na ikukwento yung details) basta nakakakahilo sya. Syet! Tapos yung rice nila, although it looked nice, lasang wheat naman. And first time kong makakain ng pickled carrots and cabbage. Ewww! Sama ng lasa. Hmmmm...no offense meant sa kung sino man, I'm just stating my opinion.
Altophobic Wednesday
Yey! Climbing a 66-foot oil tank is quite imposing but quite an experience. Nakakalula! Ansakit pa sa binti. Hmmm. Imagine seeing a not-so-horizontally-enhanced guy (para di masyadong masakit pakinggan.. hehe) inside the gym lifting weights. Ang panget.
Tuesday: Locked-up
Bored. Frankly, not an exciting day. Wala kaming ginawa after the briefing kundi magbasa ng manual na sobrang kapal. I tried to warn him, pero mahina talaga boses ko eh.
Monday: Disis It!
Letseng driver ng Trailer truck! Kung nanood ka ng mga morning shows nung monday, chances are nabalitaan mo yung grabeng traffic sa kahabaan ng North Expressway (southbound). First day at work, pero, thanks to one stupid driver I'm still stuck in the middle of the goddamn traffic at 9 am in the morning when I was supposed to be in Petron Megaplaza by 8 am. Not quite a good start, di ba? I was so sure I made quite a bad impression with that incident. Eh, kasalanan ko ba yun? I left home at around 5 am... okay, 5:30, hoping I can still catch an FX and make it on time. But, Lo and behold! Some stupid driver decided to make the center lane of the Expressway an extension of his parking lot. Nakatulog daw kasi inaantok. Well, hindi naman ako ganun kasama, naawa din naman ako sa kanya pero for heaven's sake! First day ko sa work! and I'm late. Imagine the stretch of the expressway from Bocaue to Balintawak all lined up with slow-moving vehicles. Wag mo ng iconsider na Monday yun. Where's the fun in that? This can't be happening. This just cannot be.
I still managed to arrive in Makati at around 10 am, wishing the ground would just open itself up and engulf me. Sobrang nakakahiya! Luckily, they've been more than understanding of the situation, but I made it a point to tell myself, "Shit, pasalamat ka. Wag na wag mo ng uulitin!"
So, to cut the story short, nakaalis kami ng Makati before lunch, naligaw-ligaw (first time ulit kasing magmaneho ng boss namin sa Metro Manila after some years kaya nalito-lito siya) sa kung saan-saan, finally, nakarating din kami sa Refinery sa Bataan at around 4 pm. Kakapagod.

Thursday: Grilled
I had to woke up as early as 4 am in the morning to catch up the 6:30 am ferry trip to Bataan, nervous and expecting the worst for the interview. I thought we were scheduled for the final interview but it turned out we were in for two consecutive interviews! The first panel interview was mostly probing questions about personality, background, etc. It was still okay, I think I handled it fairly nicely. After a couple of buckles and nervous ramblings, I survived an hour of gruelling interrogation. Or so I'd like to think. I'm not sure if I really did convinced the members of the panel, I just tried my best to be honest and sound honest.
As if we were half-baked chickens, it turned out one panel interview was not enough, so the Operations Manager did the final grilling with the toughest interview I had so far. Nakakaiyak. It's hard to avoid being blanked when you can't convince the interviewer with the best answer you have in mind. I just can't help feeling messed up after that. I thought my chances had gone down the drain.
Friday: Yey! I got gased!
Surprise! Surprise! I got the job! You can call me "Gasoline Boy" from now on. I'll be working for the company whose TV commercial features a car morphing into a cheetah. *wink* I'm bound for Bataan tomorrow. I'm not sure if I can still update this blog regularly, for we'll be doing field works most of the time plus I heard that we don't have our own office. No office, no PC, no internet connection. Well, not entirely; but I think I'm gonna have a hard time accessing the net with that set-up. I'll just try my best to go online as regularly as possible.
Hmm, come to think of it. *grins*

Expecting the Unexpected
Wednesday, 8/13/03
Got a boost of confidence yesterday afternoon after the HR Associate from * called to schedule an interview (hopefully the last) cum plant trip to the Bataan Refinery. I was hoping for them to call since another call would make my chance of being hired, if not a sure fire, at least a notch higher. I was eating my lunch at the time, but after the call, I suddenly felt full and excited. Not that I’m making a big deal out of it because this is in fact a big deal in itself. Or at least to me. Finishing college a few semesters beyond necessary is already something to dampen down your self-esteem. To finish it with colors, (note: colors. Not flying colors) or rather with a “colored” transcript drenched in the essence of bloody 5.0’s, is enough to peg your morale to a record low. (Hala, feeling ko tuloy napaka-walangkwenta kong estudyante. Hehe.) But to have the opportunity to actually work for one of the country’s top company in spite of my not-so-impressive record is something to be thankful for.
I just hope I won’t preempt anything by writing this entry out of sheer excitement. In any case, I will keep my fingers crossed.

The Phantom Menace
Saturday, 8/9/03
Kids are cute. Sans the little devil's costumes, that is.
Try living with three hyperactive brats and you’ll never need a membership to any of the nearest gym for your workouts, libre pang background music. Each day, your house transforms into a living sound system, complete with top-of-the-line subwoofers. Para kang naka-Dolby Surround Sound, ultra clear and crisp, unadulterated anytime of the day.
No ESPN on the cable? No need to worry. How ‘bout basketball? (Actually, kids trashing the whole house even if the trash can is just a few steps away), boxing? (or kids hitting each other after a heated argument on whose get to be the “IT” on a wild game of “taguan”), golf? (more like kids hitting the poor cats and dogs simply for the fun of it), or, wall climbing, perhaps? (read: kids climbing window grills like chimpanzees on the loose). You name it, they’ve got it.
But here’s the fun(?) part, in the midst of all the action lies your workout. Not convinced yet? Try being the boxing referee, the golf caddy, and the wall climbing guide and the basketball court wiper a.k.a. floor manager all at the same time.
Hopefully, they’re not like that all the time. They can also be super sweet, especially if they’re eyeing your dessert after they’ve devoured half of the lot. May libre yung kiss. Halik ni Judas, ba? They are thoughtful all the time. Thoughtful, defined as someone who never forgets TV schedules especially cartoons. Kids are ultra-generous during mealtimes. They’ll be more than willing to offer, without batting an eyelash, food that they can’t finish or those that they don’t like eating, which are most likely veggies. Instant vegetarian ka nun! O di ba, healthy?
Kids are cute and adorable. But most of the time they are more like agents of mischief disguised as angels. But we already know that, don't we? Besides, we all were kids once.

Something For the Little Boy
Thursday, July 24, 2003
Excerpts from the true-to-life film Antwone Fisher starring Denzel Washington (also in his directorial debut) and Derek Luke, in the title role:
Antwone: "Who will cry for the little boy, lost and all alone?
Who will cry for the little boy, abandoned without his own?
Who will cry for the little boy? He cried himself to sleep.
Who will cry for the little boy? He never had for keeps.
Who will cry for the little boy? He walked the burning sand.
Who will cry for the little boy? The boy inside the man.
Who will cry for the little boy? Who knows well hurt and pain.
Who will cry for the little boy? He died and died again.
Who will cry for the little boy? A good boy he tried to be.
Who will cry for the little boy, who cries inside of me?"
Jerome (Denzel):"Who will cry for the little boy, Antwone?".
Antwone:"I will."

"It's hard to make a comeback when you haven't been anywhere." - written in the dust on the back of a bus. Wickenburg, AZ
If any place in the world would be named Boredom, I could easily be elected as its leader by (de)merits of an extremely dry, and uneventful existence. Life in the confines of the four walls of our house is a raw unedited music video of Mom and my nephew haggling their way to school in the morning, my sis-in-law’s child-rearing antics, my brother’s annoying attitude, and myself in the midst of all the domestic (mis)happenings, with a cacophony of all the household sounds/noise in the background.
It seems like each day is dragging me to a downward spiral, my positivism (if there’s a pinch still left) slowly being taken. It doesn’t make sense. If I could only say all the things in my head in this webspace without fear of prejudice. What the heck? What’s the use of having a blog if you can’t? That’s probably why the thought of updating my blog entries is slowly losing its attraction on me… Fuck it. I’m not making any sense at all.

Kakapagod.

This afternoon, I got the call I've been expecting for about a month now. I suddenly felt nervous and excited of what might happen tomorrow. Can't say anything more. I'm on the iodized-deficient side today and starting to sound robotic. Just forgive me. I'm just afraid I might screw this one up. Cross your fingers y'all. Wish me (good)luck on my interview.

Something For the Little Boy
Thursday, July 24, 2003
Excerpts from the true-to-life film Antwone Fisher
